Preparing for a hospital stay

Pre-operative Instructions:

  • Arrange for transportation home after your surgery. You are not permitted to drive a motor vehicle for 24 hours after your surgery. You will be released in the company of a responsible adult.
  • No solid food or alcohol after midnight the night before your surgery.
    • You may drink clear fluids up until 2 hours before your surgery. Clear fluids include water, apple juice, cranberry juice (no orange juice), clear tea or black coffee (no milk, cream or powdered creamer, no sugar or sweetener), clear broth (no noodles, vegetables, meat or solids of any kind).
  • You may take medications as ordered by your surgeon or the anesthesiologist on the morning of your surgery with a sip of water.
  • Do not bring any valuables or jewelry with you.
  • Arrive at the hospital two hours prior to your surgery time. Report to the Admitting Department. Bring your Manitoba Health Card and other medical insurance cards with you.

What you may bring, for stays in the general wards:

  • Clothing, such as slippers and bath robes.
  • Eyeglasses, dentures, watches.
  • Toiletries, such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and other personal care items.
  • Reading material.

It is a good idea to label your personal items, including clothing, with your name and phone number.

Please leave large sums of money (more than $20), jewelry and other valuables at home. If you have valuables with you at the time of admission, we recommend that a family member take your belongings home. If this is not possible, your valuables can be placed for safekeeping with the Cashiers Office located in the Green Owl Zone, Level 1.

Cell phones and other wireless communication devices are permitted in some areas of the hospital. Please follow posted signs or as an HSC team member before turning it on.

Other items to leave at home or bring at your own risk include:

  • Items of sentimental value,
  • Irreplaceable papers,
  • Credit cards,
  • Plug-in appliances, such as electric shavers and hair dryers,
  • Expensive clothing and outerwear,
  • Alarm clocks,
  • Radios, music players, iPods, computers.

Health Sciences Centre is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please keep this in mind when deciding what to bring.

If you have more than $20 in your possession upon admission, and you are not able to send this money home with family or friends, please turn this money over to your nurse. It will be deposited with the Cashier for safekeeping.

Claiming your valuables from safekeeping
Your personal belongings and any money kept for you on the unit will be returned to you when you are discharged. If you have deposited money with the hospital Cashier, you may claim this at the Cashier located in the Green Owl Zone, Level 1.

Cashier is open (effective June 22, 2020) from 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Only a limited amount of cash is available. A cheque will be mailed to you for any outstanding amount. Your valuables can be picked up 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. For lost and found and after hours patient valuables retrieval, please report to the side door at MS108 at the 820 Sherbrook Street Welcome Desk.

NOTE: Scented products can aggravate health issues. Please do not use perfume or scented products before coming to HSC Winnipeg or while you are in the hospital. Thank You.
