Diagnostic ultrasound uses high frequency sound to obtain images of the body.  The scans are performed by a sonographer who guides a small hand-held probe over the area of interest.  The procedure is painless, and typically lasts 30-60 minutes.  The images are carefully examined by the sonologist who sends a written report to the referring physician.

Having no identifiable side-effects, diagnostic ultrasound is used to examine almost every area of the body.  In addition to its use in obstetrics, it is particularly well-suited for examination of soft tissues and for looking at blood flow in arteries and veins.
